Air Force Protects Gas Fields

The Israeli Air Force has begun protecting gas fields off the Mediterranean coast using unmanned aircraft. The UAVs conduct surveillance, in hopes of preventing terrorist attacks in the area.

Lebanon has claimed some of the gas as its own, leading to fears that Hizbullah could use the issue as pretext for an attack. Israel argues that the gas fields are clearly on the Israeli side of the northern maritime border.

PA Official Calls for `Friday Intifadas' During Ramadan

Bassam Abu Sharif, a former advisor to Yasir Arafat and a member of the PLO, called Tuesday on all Arab Muslims and Christians in and around the world to turn Fridays during the month of Ramadan into days of intifada of the millions against what he termed "the Israeli occupation" and the "Judaizing" of Jerusalem, the Palestinian Authority-based Ma'an news agency reported.

According to the report, Abu Sharif also called on Arabs to demand that the United States and Europe implement UN Resolution 242 and recognize an independent Palestinian state whose capital is Jerusalem.

Abu Sharif claimed that all Israeli governments have opposed the establishment of a Palestinian state and have wanted to expel the Arabs from the region. He added that his call for the `Friday Intifadas' during Ramadan was made in order to protect the `Arabness' of Jerusalem and Palestine.

Abu Sharif said that the Arab anger could turn into worldwide anger, causing Europe and the United States to experience large shocks because of their commitment to what he termed Israel's "popular racism."

Abu Sharif is the same PA official who in 2009 accused Israel of being responsible for the "assassination" of Arafat, who died in 2004. It has been confirmed by Arafat's doctor himself that the former PA Chairman died of AIDS.

PA Media: Peres 'Poisons' Sports Stars

A recent article in a Palestinian Authority-based newspaper accused Israel of deliberately inviting sports stars it knows PA Arabs love in order to upset them.

The article appeared in the sports section of the official PA daily Al-Hayat Al-Jadida on July 1. It was translated and published on the website of the Palestinian Media Watch research institute.

The article accuses Israeli President Shimon Peres, usually viewed as a supporter of the PA, as the "tip of triangle of destruction," since the Peres Center for Peace is the institution which initiates the visits of these stars.

As part of the Peres Center for Peace's activities to promote coexistence between Israelis and Arabs, Peace Matches are held where mixed Israeli-Palestinian football teams play against top international teams like Real Madrid and others. "'Israel' aims its poisoned arrows with great accuracy at the heart of every sports star who enters the hearts of Palestinians and Muslim Arabs," says the article, written by Wasfi Shahwan.

"It is clear that Israel is able to invent ploys and set traps in order to attract the Arabs' favorite international football stars... to cause frustration to the Palestinians... Since our enemy is shrewd, it is well aware of how the Spanish [football] League is admired by Palestinians and Arabs; therefore, it continues to target the stars of the outstanding Spanish League..." continues Shahwan.

The writer goes on to attack the Peres Center for Peace for "spewing its poison in the faces of the Palestinians." He adds that the visits of the international sports stars to Israel are anti-Palestinian activities.

For example, he writes, "[Argentinian football player] Maradona, who is incapable of standing on principle or sustaining a position... was one of the first athletes to don a skullcap and pray at the Al-Buraq Wall (i.e., the Western Wall)..."

"The 'War of Stars' is made up of dirty campaigns which the Zionist machine carries out against Palestinian sports, aided by all the celebrities of the world's sports sector, after it identifies them as being ignorant of anything related to the Palestinian cause, or having a bias in favor of the colonialist state," the article says.

"Jose Mourinho, the current manager of Real Madrid, visited the Zionist entity in 2005, as manager [and coach] of Chelsea, champion of the English League. He said then that he had come to `Israel' in order to prove that football brings hope, and to aid the efforts of the Shimon Peres Center to create a better world through the establishment of mixed Palestinian and `Israeli' teams..."

PMW noted that the article also includes general hate speech such as referring to Israel as "the Zionist entity," writing that "the Zionist octopus' arms reach out in every direction," and placing the words Israel and Tel Aviv throughout the article in quotation marks as an indicator that the PA does not recognize Israel.

Why I May Run for President

By John R. Bolton (Commentary)

Adam Smith wrote in The Wealth of Nations that "the first duty of the sovereign, that of protecting the society from the violence and invasion of other independent societies, can be performed only by means of a military force." Today, failing to protect our national security inevitably endangers our economic prosperity by making us vulnerable to global adversaries.

It is clear that President Obama does not agree with Smith's wisdom. Obama's policies are jeopardizing not only our national security and economy, but our constitutional sovereignty too.

That is why I have been considering running for President. The Republican Party must nominate a leader who, unlike Obama, understands instinctively that America's liberty, prosperity and national security are inextricably linked...

No ally has been more victimized by Obama's worldview than Israel. As our most anti-Israel President, bar none, Obama fundamentally misunderstands the nature of the security threats to Israel and the United States in the Middle East. Iran's support for terrorism and pursuit of nuclear weapons goes unanswered. Radical groups around the region have been emboldened in the face of sustained incoherence in U.S. policy.

In addition to Israel, Arab friends in the region, especially those producing oil and gas critical to the international economy, are shocked at the Obama administration's treatment of close friends and its inability to comprehend, let alone defend, core American interests.

In addition, Obama is enamored of European-style schemes for global governance. He has naïvely called for a world in which America voluntarily gives up its nuclear weapons in hopes that our adversaries do so too. He yearns to join the International Criminal Court and risks subjecting America's warriors to prosecutions and trial...

The American dream is under assault, and Obama is not fighting back. We need a real President in the Oval Office, someone who knows instinctively and by experience that, as Adam Smith said, "The first duty of the sovereign" is to protect and promote American sovereignty and national security. Otherwise, economic prosperity will count for little.

To date, in my view, no Republican candidate has persuasively argued that our economic recovery and long-term prosperity are completely intertwined with a strong national security posture. If no one else is prepared to make that case, I will.
