Iranian Defection Led to Strike on Syrian Nuclear Site

The February 2007 defection of a retired senior Iranian military official to the U.S. paved the way for the Israeli raid that destroyed a Syrian nuclear site in September of that year, according to an article in Thursday's edition of the Swiss newspaper Neue Zuercher Zeitung, written by Hans Ruehle, former chief of the planning staff of the German Defense Ministry.

According to Ruehle, The U.S. and Israel were both caught off guard by the claim made by Reza Asghari - a retired general in Iran's elite Revolutionary Guards and a former deputy defense minister - "that Iran was financing a secret nuclear project of Syria and North Korea." The two countries made up for it with an intensive investigation leading up to September 6th raid.

America 'Moves Towards Abandonment of Israel'

An unidentified former highly-placed U.S. intelligence official has broken silence and said that America may soon be abandoning Israel in favor of the Arabs. "This is just the beginning", he said, "Israel could be about to lose the support of the United States."

The source made these remarks in an exclusive interview with Douglas J. Hagmann, the director of the Northeast Intelligence Network (NIN), which is comprised of veteran licensed professional investigators, analysts, military affairs specialists and researchers. The group has combined their resources to provide accurate and well-sourced information via their website.

Hagmann appeared on Israel National Radio's Weekend Edition with host Tamar Yonah. When questioned about the possible abandonment of Israel by America, Hagmann told Yonah, "The Obama administration is no friend to Israel, is no friend to the Jews in America and is no friend to democracy or freedom in America. …Just by his very appointments, we can see him filling positions of power with people who are anti-Semitic, who want to see Israel essentially dissolved as a nation, if not by diplomacy, then certainly by war."

In his report, the unidentified source told Hagmann, "I have every reason to believe, based on what I've seen at my level of [security] clearance especially over the last several years, that Israel will soon be completely on their own… or worse."

He explained this would happen "when our administration provides more support to Arab countries [with] financial and military aid, undercutting Israel's defense efforts all while pushing Israel to succumb to the pressure of unreasonable demands designed to end with their political annihilation as a nation."

Hagmann reported that "the Middle East will be the site of 'the coming war,' and Israel will be at its epicenter. If we survive as a nation, the U.S. will not be on the side of righteousness in this war, instead turning our back to - or our guns against - our only true friend in the Middle East - Israel," he said.

Israel Arrests Hamas Politicians in West Bank After Talks Collapse

By Luis Ramirez (VOA-Jerusalem)

Israeli soldiers have arrested a number of Hamas politicians in the West Bank. The arrests follow the collapse of indirect negotiations between Israel and the militant Islamist group this week.

Hamas officials labeled the arrests an attempt by Israel to punish the group after the two sides failed to reach a deal for a truce in indirect negotiations for a prisoner swap brokered by Egypt.

Israel had sought to win the release of Gilad Shalit, a soldier seized by Palestinian terrorists and taken to the Gaza Strip in 2006. Talks broke down when Israel refused to hand over all of the Palestinian prisoners that Hamas wanted released - some of whom included people involved in terror attacks that killed Israeli civilians.

Among those arrested in the Israeli-occupied West Bank were four Hamas members of the Palestinian Legislative Council and a university professor. A statement from Israel's military said those detained were leaders of an ongoing effort to restore the administrative branch of Hamas, which Israel considers a terrorist organization. The group does not recognize the Jewish State's right to exist and has called for its destruction.

In remarks carried by Israeli radio, Hamas lawmaker Moushir al-Masri condemned the arrests. He accused Israel of trying to blackmail Hamas, an effort he vowed will fail.

In a related story, long time Fatah leader Mohammed Dahlan said the organization has never recognized Israel's right to exist. The former Fatah security commander made the remarks during an interview with a Palestinian Authority-controlled TV station.

Dahlan was responding to a question about Fatah's reported insistence that Hamas recognize Israel's right to exist as a precondition for the establishment of a Palestinian unity government. "We acknowledge that the PLO did recognize Israel's right to exist, but we are not bound by it as a resistance faction," he added

Chapin: Destroy Iranian Nuclear Facilities Now

By Israel Faxx News Services

Roger Chapin, founder and President of Make America Safe, has written an article for the Washington Times which advocates preemptive strikes on Iran to destroy their nuclear facilities at the earliest possible time.

Chapin wants the U.S. to act preemptively to head off an Iranian nuclear attack on Israel and an electro-magnetic pulse (EMP) attack on the United States.

"And given Israel's warnings to Iran and its prior attacks on Iraqi and Syrian nuclear targets, Iran will very likely try and nuke Israel first, especially with the very hawkish Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu now in charge," Chapin wrote. "Since the U.S. would presumably retaliate, this makes an Iranian pre-emptive EMP attack on the United States all the more likely."

Chapin explained that an EMP could be generated by detonating a single nuclear-armed missile 200 miles above the U.S., which could be launched from a freighter off the Gulf Coast. He cited a congressionally authorized EMP Commission report in April 2008 which said such an attack would render most computers inoperable, thereby knocking out the electric grid system with devastating consequences. He said most of the population would die from starvation or disease within a year.

"The American people must understand that no less than the survival of our nation as we know it today is at stake and that circumstances beyond our control could prompt a catastrophic EMP attack upon us at any moment," he wrote.

Chapin warned that the situation is grave. "No matter how you figure it, it's an almost unbelievably scary situation, especially given the relative ease with which an EMP attack could be launched against our homeland and how utterly catastrophic it would be," he said. "Never before has an American president faced a more fateful decision."

Lamenting the lack of awareness by the public and the Congress of "the horrific menace we face," Chapin called for a national debate on this "all-important issue."

Iranian Official: Nobody Sees What Pope Does in Vatican

A member of Iran's Supreme Council for Cultural Revolution has claimed that the Pope traveled overseas to compensate alleged victims of sexual attacks by alleged homosexual priests. The comments of Hassan Rahimpour Azghadi were made several months ago and translated for publication on Wednesday by the Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI).

Azghadi, addressing viewers on Iranian TV, charged that the pope traveled to the United States and Australia to compensate victims of alleged sexual abuse by priests. The Iranian official's function is to help export the Islamic Revolution and act against Western influence and feminism.

He stated in one speech, "The corrupt pope went on a tour in order to cover up the homosexuality of his priests. As you know, he made a tour from America to Australia, saying: 'We are sorry that our priests are pedophiles and homosexuals.' ... He paid $3 billion in compensation to families whose little children were abused by priests in churches. But nobody sees what the pope himself does in the Vatican. It's not clear who should apologize for the pope's deeds."

In another speech, he took aim at the U.S., stating its values are "sex, violence and melancholy." We do not want to coexist with America. We want to combat America – not just America, but Zionism, England, and the leaders of global capitalism, who are exploiting the Muslims and the oppressed throughout the world," said Azghadi.

He also claimed that the U.S. suffered almost no casualties in World War II because it entered in the final stages, although historians estimate the number of American casualties to have been between 300,000-400,000.

"In the many films about World War II, which you must have seen, the main characters are always American or English, and each of these characters kills 2,000 or 3,000 Germans singlehanded," he declared. "They produce hundreds or thousands of films about operations that never took place, heroic feats they never accomplished, and sacrifices they never made. They are highly skilled in this."

Azghadi concluded that the history of the war was recorded according to the victor. He said if the German-Japanese axis had won the war, "All the negative things said about Fascism and Nazism, and all the talk about a free world – it would all have been reversed. If the Communists had prevailed, the regime of liberal capitalism would have disappeared, and everything would have been recounted from a Communist perspective."

Hamas Offers Reward for Men That Marry Gaza Widows

Hamas is offering a $3000 reward for any man willing to marry the widow of a "shahid" (a martyr), several Arab websites reported this week. Hamas initiated the move in an attempt to lower the number of widowed women in the Gaza Strip who lost the spouses who provided for them and their children, and in order to ease their emotional grief and financial difficulties.

The number of widows in Gaza has grown dramatically after Operation Cast Lead. The Palestinian society regards divorcées and widows in a negative way, and young men usually refrain from marrying them. Hamas hopes that by encouraging men to wed these women, it will be providing them with stability and a better life.

According to the report, Hamas has set a number of terms that the grooms must meet in order to receive the money: The men must be able to provide for two women or more, be religiously devout and ethical. They are also required to allocate sufficient space in their house for the new wife, help care for her children and treat them as if they were their own.

PA Plans to Fly Glider Painted in Palestinian Colors over Jerusalem

By Ha'aretz

The Palestinian Authority is planning to fly a glider plane painted in the colors of the Palestinian national flag over the walls of Jerusalem's Old City on Saturday. The stunt is to be part of a series of events held by the Palestinian Authority declaring the city to be "the capital of Arabic culture for 2009."

The head of the Legal Forum for the Land of Israel, Nachi Eyal, on Wednesday urged Public Security Minister Avi Dichter and Police Commissioner David Cohen to thwart the staging of the event.

"To the best of my understanding, this is an attempt to demonstrate Palestinian sovereignty in Jerusalem in an illegal manner," said Eyal. "The law...obligates the Palestinian Authority to respect the sovereignty of Israel within the bounds of the State of Israel, including East Jerusalem."

Police are preparing to prevent the events in Jerusalem from taking place.
