McDonald's to Employ Security Personnel
The McDonald's chain in Israel announced it will be deploying a
security guard in all stores not located inside a mall.
The stores inside malls already benefit from the shopping center
security. McDonald's officials feel the step is a prudent one in
light of the threat posed by the current security situation.
U.S. Criticizes Israeli Army Raid
By Meredith Buel (VOA-Jerusalem)
The United States has criticized the latest Israeli army incursion
into a Palestinian-ruled town. The State Department said the
destruction Tuesday of two police buildings in the West Bank town
of Jenin was provocative and undermined efforts to end Mideast
violence. The Israeli army said the nighttime operation was in
response to a series of suicide bombings linked to militants from
Israeli officials described the raid as a message to Palestinian
leader Yasir Arafat that he will pay the price for failing to put
an end to terrorist attacks by Palestinian militants.
Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon warned the Palestinians they
stand to lose "additional assets, unless there an end to
terrorism and violence."
Palestinian radio quoted local sources as saying Israel may now be
preparing for an incursion into the West Bank town of Beit Jala.
Last week, Israeli forces seized Palestinian offices in the West
Bank village of Abu Dis.
Tanks and bulldozers rumbled into Jenin in the first major Israeli
incursion into a Palestinian-controlled town in more than 10 months
of violence. Heavy fighting erupted, and the Palestinian police
headquarters was demolished.
The army said the assault was in response to recent Palestinian
suicide bombings. Israeli officials say the latest such attack,
carried out Sunday near the coastal city of Haifa, was directed
Dore Gold, a spokesman for Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, said
"This isn't about retaliation, this isn't about revenge. This is
about accountability. Jenin has become a hub of terrorism
against northern Israel. At least four or more terrorist attacks
have emanated from Jenin, and the Palestinian Authority has not
lifted a finger to stop this. We are saying stop the terrorism and
stop it now."
Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat denounced the incursion and
called on the United Nations Security Council for protection. "I
hope that the Security Council will convene immediately in order to
halt these Israeli measures and actions and this Israeli
aggression," said Erekat, "because the whole Middle East region, if
they go ahead with their occupation of the West Bank again and the
Gaza Strip again, will never be the same." In recent months,
Israeli tanks have entered Palestinian areas in the Gaza Strip, but
have not launched major raids in the West Bank.
Gun battles later exploded in the West Bank town of Bethlehem and
between nearby Beit Jala and the Jewish community of Gilo, built on
disputed land adjacent to Jerusalem.
Near the West Bank city of Hebron, the army said a Jewish settler
was wounded, and a child slightly hurt, when Palestinian gunmen
fired on their car.
In more violence, a Palestinian man, Shadi al-Asfuri, was killed in
an explosion in Nablus. He was identified as an activist from
Arafat's Fatah faction.
Palestinians Say Nude Female Soldiers are New 'Zionist' Weapon
By Gamla News Service
The Al Hayat al Jadida newspaper, reportedly associated with the
Palestinian Authority, has accused the Israel Defense Forces
of using semi-nude female soldiers standing atop tanks to lure
Palestinians and then killing them.
A Page One headline in the newspaper said: "The occupation is using
naked women to hunt down intifada youth." The daily was reporting
on an alleged Gaza Strip clash in which the partially-clad female
soldier lured Palestinian demonstrators to their deaths.
The Palestinian paper reported: "She started to strip her clothes
off in front of the demonstrators until she was [nearly] naked.
Some of the protesters said they were disgusted by it while others
said the Zionist soldier made rude gestures at them."
When they approached the tank to throw stones at the nearly nude
female soldier, she reportedly took a pistol from her panties
and shot dead two Palestinians and wounded nine others.
A spokesman for the IDF at first declined to comment on the report,
but later said it was completely ridiculous.
Red Hot Chili Peppers Band Cancels Performance
The Red Hot Chili Peppers rock band have notified organizers
they would be canceling a planned August 28 performance in Israel
due to the deteriorating security situation.
According to Shuki Weiss, the organizer, the performance would
be postponed to an alternate date. He added that 20,000 tickets
have been sold to date.
The band originally canceled the concert but reconsidered after
receiving a personal call from former President Bill Clinton.
Despite the request from the former president, recent attacks seem
to have changed their minds a second time, prompting them to cancel
